A private Northern Lights camp near Rovaniemi

Polarman's Camp is located approximately 25 minutes from Rovaniemi city centre, in a quiet forest clearing with minimal surrounding light and a clear view towards the northern sky. The warm Aurora Dome provides a comfortable base for an evening spent moving between the fire, the forest and the open sky.

On arrival, the Polarman welcomes the group and introduces the evening. As storyteller and Aurora watcher, he shares stories about the Northern Lights, explains what to look for in the sky and keeps track of conditions throughout the program.


Inside the warm Aurora Dome

Guests can settle onto reindeer skins beside the fireplace inside the heated Aurora Dome. The temperature stays at approximately +15°C or warmer, so there is always a comfortable place to return to after time outside.

A short Northern Lights film is shown on a large screen, followed by stories and legends about the Aurora. Hot berry juice or the Polarman's special magic drink is served with ginger cookies while the guide watches the northern sky.


Snowshoeing to the frozen lake

The active part of the evening begins at the camp, where the group puts on snowshoes and follows the guide through the winter forest towards a nearby frozen lake. The shoreline is approximately 500 to 600 metres away.

The snowshoeing takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes in total for the journey there and back. The pace leaves time to experience the quiet forest and winter darkness before the landscape opens at the lake.

From the frozen lake, the horizon is broad and unobstructed, with a clear view towards the northern sky. The group spends time watching the sky before returning through the forest on snowshoes to the warmth of Polarman's Camp.


Watching the Northern Lights

The Polarman keeps watch on the sky throughout the evening. If Aurora activity appears, the group makes the most of the conditions from the camp clearing or the open lake. Northern Lights sightings depend on natural conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

A photo and video session is available if requested. When conditions allow, the guide can photograph guests with the Northern Lights.


Firepit under the Arctic sky

At the camp, guests can gather around the outdoor firepit to grill traditional Finnish sausage and marshmallows, enjoy a warm drink and continue watching the sky. The Aurora Dome remains close by whenever it is time to warm up.

        What to bring
